"This is the best moisturizer for sensitive skin. I had so many people tell me to try it after a pharmacist recommended it and also my dermatologist said it would be good for my dermatitis. Now i can't live without it."
The Pregnancy Skincare Guide

There's no such thing as "pregnancy-safe" skincare.
It's not a regulated term. Any brand can print it on a product with no testing, no standard, and no accountability. What actually matters is whether an ingredient can penetrate skin in sufficient amounts to enter the bloodstream and affect a developing baby. For the vast majority of topical products, that threshold is never reached. A few categories are the exception and that's what this guide covers.
Pregnancy has a way of making your skincare shelf feel like a minefield. You pick up your usual serum, Google one ingredient, fall into a rabbit hole, and put it back down. Most of the information out there doesn't help and catastrophises.
I'm Natassia, a cosmetic chemist and the founder of Conserving Beauty. I've spent years formulating skincare and creating beauty products from the ground up - so I know exactly what goes into a formula and why.
The ingredients with the longest safety track record are the plant-based, naturally-derived ones dermatologists have trusted for decades. That's the philosophy behind every CB formula and why our products have received over 200 unpaid dermatologist recommendations.
Here's what to avoid, what's suitable to use, and the products I'd genuinely recommend.
A note before you read
Always check with your doctor or midwife before changing your skincare routine during pregnancy. What I can offer is the science - not medical advice.
Ingredients to Avoid
Retinoids
(Vitamin A derivatives)
This is the big one. Retinol, tretinoin, retinaldehyde - all forms of Vitamin A are off the table. High systemic doses of Vitamin A are teratogenic, and while topical absorption is low, the risk-benefit ratio doesn't stack up when you're pregnant.
High-dose (>2%)
Salicylic Acid
Low concentrations (under 2%) and or in rinse-off products are generally considered fine. For example our pimple treatments are ok as they are just under 2%. Avoid high-dose BHA exfoliants, and watch for stacking salicylic acid across multiple products.
Hydroquinone
Typically used for pigmentation. Has unusually high systemic absorption for a topical ingredient. Best to skip it.
Certain essential oils
Rosemary, clary sage, and a handful of others are flagged in high concentrations. Worth checking if you use oil-heavy products. All Conserving Beauty products don't use these oils.
The 'Yes' List
Hyaluronic Acid
Draws moisture into skin. Molecule is too large to penetrate meaningfully.
Niacinamide
One of the most well-studied actives. Excellent for pregnancy-related pigmentation. Safe.
Vitamin C
Antioxidant, brightening, collagen supporting. Safe.
Glycolic & Lactic Acid
AHAs at typical over the counter concentrations are considered ok.
SPF (mineral or chemical)
Always a non-negotiable. Pregnancy can trigger melasma and sun protection is your best defence and anti-aging skincare.
Aloe Vera + Glycerin
Always great gentle hydration. You can find these ingredients in most Conserving Beauty products.
Not All Skincare Is The Same
Pregnancy changes your skin. Sometimes dramatically. And navigating what's safe, what works, and what's actually worth using is exhausting, especially when most of the information out there either scares you or sells you something. We built this set differently. Every formula is built around the plant-based, naturally-derived ingredients that dermatologists have trusted for decades.
